For the Armory Show 2024 edition, we explore the dichotomy between "in" and "out," where a dynamic interplay shapes ideas, personalities, and alliances, resonating both behind closed doors and in the public eye. Juxtaposing the works of Alan Villaviciencio (1987, Mexico City, MX) and Manuel Forte (1979, Oporto, PORT), we underscore the profound significance of everyday life and emotions within concealed interiors and open public spaces. Villavicencio's artistic language pushes pictorial boundaries, weaving chromatic narratives from chaotic urban spaces. Crafting "residual landscapes” conformed by modules and chosen palettes to address aesthetics in the cityscape. A challenge to our perception, his work serves as an intersection, prompting a reevaluation of conventional painting, revealing environmental and spatial consciousness in his continuous study of visual modes. In contrast, Forte echoes the temporal perspectives found in Bonnard's interiors. His "domestic landscapes" pay homage to the telling of intimate worlds concealed behind closed doors, capturing the elusive passage of time. With bold colors, motley patterns, and a peculiar use of perspective he invites viewers to engage in a voyeuristic exercise while becoming integral parts of the artwork. Questioning where two-dimensional canvas painting ends and sculpture begins. The synergy of Villavicencio's outdoor explorations and Forte's homage to hidden narratives converge, challenging traditional painting norms. Unveiling a threshold where the conscious and subconscious emerge from their fragmented forms. These two artists highlight the undeniable significance of everyday experiences—a testament to the profound nature of the mundane where life unfurls in vibrant hues and intricate patterns.
