For Exposure (Expo Chicago 2023) Galería Karen Huber are proposing a duo show betweentwo Mexican artists, Othiana Roffiel (Mexico City, 1990) and Luis Hampshire(Oaxaca de Juarez, 1975). Both artists are interested in exploring a liminalspace between abstraction and figuration, that departs from a purely repre-sentational style. Most importantly, both artists introduce biomorphic andanthropomorphic elements that symbolize residues of the real world. Thepresence of nature, particularly the human body, emerges in diverse andsubtle ways to create a more frontal dialogue with the spectator that chal-lenges traditional engagement with painting.
For Othiana Roffiel, the constant study of surrounding forms and colors, both natural and manmade, inform her pictorial vocabulary. For LuisHamp-shire, objects and images are always in a constant stage ofdecodification;both practices engage with the tradition of painting within acontemporary, evolving, Mexican landscape.
