Akwetey Orraca-Tetteh - Western Retreat

Galería Karen Huber is pleased to present “Western Retreat”, the first solo show in Mexico by the Ghanaian American artist Akwetey Orraca-Tetteh (New York, 1980) curated by Fabiola Talavera (Monterrey, 1995).
It features a series of paintings largely influenced by the artist’s relocation from New York to Mexico City in 2020, the exhibition’s title is a play on the word “retreat,” referring to a paradisiacal refuge where one can relax as well as to the act of withdrawing troops from a losing battle. With glaring hues and strokes that are defined on some occasions and blurred on others, these works show subjects practicing sports as entertainment and also entities in an idyllic state of pleasure and joy. In addition to his pictorial work, the exhibition integrates Orraca-Tetteh’s interdisciplinary output in the fields of sound, performance, digital art, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Galería Karen Huber se complace en presentar “Western Retreat”, la primera exposición individual en México del artista ghanés-americano Akwetey Orraca-Tetteh (Nueva York, 1980) bajo la curaduría de Fabiola Talavera (Monterrey, 1995).
La serie de pinturas que conforman la exposición es en gran parte influenciada por la relocalización del artista de Nueva York a la Ciudad de México en el 2020. El título de ésta hace un juego doble con la palabra retreat, refiriéndose a un refugio paradisiaco en donde uno puede relajarse, así como al acto de retirar las tropas de una batalla perdida. Con tonalidades deslumbrantes y pinceladas en ocasiones definidas y otras difuminadas, las obras muestran sujetos practicando deportes a manera de entretenimiento y entes en un estado idílico de goce y disfrute. Además de la obra pictórica, la muestra integra el trabajo interdisciplinar de Orraca-Tetteh en el campo del performance, del arte digital y de los non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
